Tamarix has a long history in China, with its cultivation dating back thousands of years. The ancient poetry collection *Shijing* (Book of Songs) even mentions "No Tree Folded," reflecting the cultural significance of willow-like plants. In Fuyang City, particularly in the area of Fuyang Huanggang, tamarix resources are abundant. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, locals have been engaged in the production of *Liubian*, a traditional handicraft known for its natural beauty, practical use, and artistic value. These products have gained popularity both domestically and internationally.
The cultivation of willow in Luannan County dates back millennia, while the art of weaving has a history of over 500 years. Funan County, located along the Huaihe, Honghe, and Taolu Rivers, is rich in water resources and has historically been an ideal place for tamarix growth. According to historical records from the Ming Dynasty’s Zhengde era, the area was noted for its abundant tamarix, which was harvested and processed into high-quality materials. Local traditions passed down through generations involve every member of the family in the weaving process, with skilled artisans continuously passing on their knowledge. Traditional items include baskets, bowls, and daily-use containers.
Before liberation, local merchants organized a temple fair on the 28th day of the lunar month to promote the trade of raw materials and finished willow products. After liberation, this event evolved into the "Huanggang Liubian Material Exchange Conference." In the 21st century, it was renamed the "Huanggang Liubian Culture and Arts Festival." Today, Huanggang Town is a major distribution center for *Liubian* products, featuring a dedicated "Liubian Street" as a permanent market.
In the early 1950s, the Huanggang Liubian Production Cooperative was established, leading to innovation in product design. New items such as flower baskets, laundry baskets, and bread baskets were introduced. By 1972, over 10,000 willow products were exported, reaching 6,100 pieces by 1980. These products were mainly sold to Japan, France, Britain, the U.S., and Italy.
After the reform and opening up, several villages in southern Fujian established *Liubian* arts and crafts factories. With improved designs and eco-friendly materials, these products became popular in both domestic and international markets, gradually forming a large-scale industry. Junan County, situated along the Huaihe flood storage area, has over 200,000 mu of suitable land for tamarix growth. Developing the *Liubian* industry helps mitigate flood risks and leverage local advantages. In 2001, Junan County was recognized as the "Hometown of China's Willows." Southern Fujian *Liubian* is known for its thin skin, flexibility, whiteness, and strong coloring, making it superior to other regional wicker products. It is ideal for crafting exquisite wicker goods that are beautiful, natural, and elegant.
