2010 China International Textile and Garment Trade Development Forum Held

On November 1, the "2010 China International Textile and Garment Trade Development Forum" took place at the Canton Fair Complex, organized by the Ministry of Commerce, hosted by the China Textile Import and Export Chamber of Commerce, and co-organized by the China Foreign Trade Center. Over 200 participants from 11 countries and regions attended, engaging in meaningful discussions on the latest trends and challenges in global textile and apparel trade. The forum also provided a platform for sharing insights on how the industry can navigate crises, drive transformation, build strong brands, increase product value, and integrate more high-tech elements into their operations. The export performance this year has exceeded initial expectations, according to Huang Yuefeng, head of the textile division at the Ministry of Commerce’s Foreign Trade Department. While exports have grown compared to the same period last year, they still lag behind the average growth seen in normal years. Despite the challenges, the overall outlook for China’s textile and clothing exports remains positive. However, he emphasized that the international market is highly competitive, with ongoing trade tensions and operational pressures limiting the industry's ability to expand. This highlights the need for a shift in foreign trade strategies and a focus on sustainable development. Japanese representative Mi Liang, a senior researcher at Japan’s Fiber Input and Output Portfolio, noted that Chinese products make up nearly 95% of Japan’s clothing imports. He pointed out that Japan is currently experiencing a major shift in its textile trade, and China is expected to become its largest trading partner soon. Similarly, Ai Saimeng, general manager of Hermes-OTTO for North Asia, mentioned that the financial crisis had impacted German retail, but Chinese products remain a key factor in Sino-German trade. Meanwhile, Huang Weiji from the Taiwan Textile Industry Development Association highlighted the growing importance of functional textiles in Taiwan and expressed interest in expanding cooperation with mainland China. Che Kejun, Deputy Chairman of the China Textile Import and Export Chamber of Commerce and CEO of Esquel Group, stressed the importance of technological innovation in driving industry transformation. He emphasized that sustainable development requires not only improved product quality and efficiency but also automation, better service, and energy-saving practices. Hilton of the Fair Labor Association added that China’s garment sector must develop higher-value supply chains, with technology playing a crucial role in future growth. The industry should aim for energy-efficient production, rapid response capabilities, and a commitment to low-carbon living. Zhou Ji'an, deputy general manager of China Export Credit Insurance Corporation, urged companies to move beyond traditional, conservative trading methods and take full advantage of credit tools and financial support. He encouraged businesses to use export credit insurance to manage risks and explore new markets. By combining manufacturing strengths with national financial resources, the industry can adopt a more advanced credit model, shifting from selling low-end products through cash transactions to offering high-end products with credit-based deals. Fu Lixin from the European Textile and Apparel Federation outlined five key trends shaping the global textile and apparel industry. These include the shift from mass-produced goods to specialty items, the use of internet technology to enhance service levels, increasing consumer demand for innovative products, higher standards for raw materials, and a stronger focus on sustainability and green technologies. Despite economic uncertainties, these trends signal a path toward more responsible and forward-thinking development in the sector.
