The postal market is experiencing a springtime revival. On Friday, reporters visiting the Zhongxing Road Collectibles Market in Chongqing observed a lively atmosphere with frequent transactions taking place. Amid rising inflation expectations and the country's macro-control measures affecting real estate and other sectors, stamp prices have seen a noticeable upward trend. For example, the "Reform and Opening-Up" double-linked stamp has surged from 53 yuan before the holiday to 80 yuan yesterday—a 51% increase. Insiders believe this stamp is set to become a hot item in the coming months.
The "Reform and Opening-Up" double-connected piece was first released in December 2008, with a print run of 1.5 million copies and an initial price of 20 yuan. It initially failed to attract attention, dropping to 18 yuan shortly after release. However, as the Tibetan market recovered, its value gradually climbed, reaching 53 yuan just before the Spring Festival. “I didn’t expect it to jump so high during the holiday,†one seasoned dealer told reporters. He added that the Beijing and Shanghai versions of the stamp are particularly hard to find, with some selling for as much as 78 yuan.
At the Zhongxing Road Market in Chongqing, a wide range of postal items are on display, including rare and valuable stamps such as the 1980 Golden Monkey Quartet and the "Quotations from Mao Zedong" series, which can fetch over 40,000 yuan. The reporter observed that 40 editions of the "Dujiangyan" stamps, issued in 1991, were sold for more than 4,000 yuan each, while dozens of zodiac tickets were traded at 9,500 yuan on-site. Many deals were made through deposits or online mail exchanges.
“Whatever you buy now is already a winner—because it’s only going up,†said Runtu, a marketer from Shanghai, in a bold statement. However, some experts caution that investment risks should not be overlooked.
Lao Ding, a postal merchant in Chongqing, believes that certain popular series, like the third round of Lunar New Year stamps from 2004, which include double-linked and silk-stamped varieties, hold strong potential. He also noted that the Chinese zodiac small ticket series, such as the 2010 "Year of the Tiger" and 2011 "Year of the Rabbit," currently trade at over 13 yuan, with a premium of around 12 yuan, indicating promising growth.
Liu Jie, executive director of the Chongqing Collection Association, advised investors to focus on well-established brands to manage risk. He pointed out that stamps still trading below face value, such as the 8-yuan small sheets featuring the "Hong Kong Return" and "Macao Return," or the "Cowboy and Weaving Girls" and "Feng Yanbo Filling Floats" in small drafts, could see significant gains if large funds enter the market.
